The only problem is that it trains you to subvocalize, which slows down your reading speed. However for the sake of his reading skill, I'd also suggest you let him read stuff silently at least as often.

Imho, of course, ymmv so take a lot of feedback from him. It's no surprise to me, either: grinding is the key to many tasks, and reading slowly in a full-concentration state (listening while reading helps a lot, it's very immersive) is a slower yet much more profitable process, as far as remembering what you read is concerned. Writing papers will be much easier for him, especially on topics with a steep learning curve. Notably for your son's school work, I feel it much easier to sum up a book to someone else after using this dual audio-visual method. Especially for someone like me (english as a second language), or for kids learning, it really does wonders ─ you essentially always learn english while learning about a totally different topic at the same time. I do it often with technical books, essays, dense material in general. It's great to learn and remember, indeed, because speech being slower than silent reading, the listener's/reader's mind has time to process the info and even reflect on it slightly before the next idea comes in.
